Text Message Scams (Smishing)

What It Is
Smishing is phishing through text messages. Scammers send texts that look like they are from banks, delivery services, or government agencies, trying to get you to click a link or call a fake number.

Warning Signs

  • Texts from unknown numbers claiming there is a “problem” with your account.
  • Messages with links shortened or that look unfamiliar.
  • Offers that are too good to be true or prizes you never entered for.
  • Messages that ask you to reply with personal information.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Do not tap links in unexpected texts.
  • Delete any message that feels suspicious, even if it uses a real company name.
  • Contact your bank or provider using the phone number on your card or bill, not the number in the text.
  • Turn on spam and scam filters in your phone’s settings if available.

What to Do If It Happens

  • If you tapped a suspicious link, close the browser and do not enter information.
  • If you shared details, contact your bank or service provider immediately.
  • Block the number and report it as spam to your phone carrier.
