Phone Scams

What It Is
Phone scams are calls from people pretending to be from banks, government offices, tech support, or charities. They try to pressure you into sending money or sharing personal details.

Warning Signs

  • Callers demand immediate payment or threaten arrest, fines, or legal action.
  • Requests for payment using gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
  • Caller refuses to provide written proof or let you call back on a verified number.
  • The number shows as “unknown” or faked on caller ID.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Hang up if the caller makes you feel rushed or scared.
  • Do not share personal information over the phone unless you started the call.
  • Use caller ID and voicemail; let unknown numbers go to voicemail.
  • Look up the official phone number from the organization’s website and call back.

What to Do If It Happens

  • If you gave payment or information, contact your bank or card company immediately.
  • Report the scam number to your phone company and to the FTC.
  • Block the number on your phone.
