Take Immediate Action After Clicking a Suspicious Link

What To Do Immediately

If you clicked a suspicious link, stay calm. Follow these steps right away:

  1. Close the website or pop-up immediately.
    Do not enter any information.
  2. Disconnect from the internet.
    • Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug your router.
    • On a phone, turn off mobile data temporarily.
  3. Do NOT download anything from the site.
  4. Run a quick security scan.
    • Windows: Virus & Threat Protection → Quick Scan
    • Mac: Update software, restart
    • iPhone/Android: Update device → restart
  5. Change the password for any affected accounts.
  6. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) wherever possible.
  7. Watch for strange emails, login alerts, or password reset messages.

When to Seek Help

  • You entered a password
  • Your device is running slowly
  • You see new apps you didn’t install
  • You received a message asking for money
