What It Is
Scammers use artificial intelligence to copy someone’s voice from a short recording. They then call family members and pretend to be that person in an emergency, asking for money.
Warning Signs
- A call that sounds like a loved one but feels rushed or unusual.
- Requests for urgent money transfers or gift cards.
- Caller does not answer simple personal questions correctly.
- The number calling is unknown or blocked.
How to Protect Yourself
- Agree on a “family code word” that only real family members know.
- If something feels off, hang up and call your loved one back on their usual number.
- Never send money based solely on a phone call.
What to Do If It Happens
- Do not send money until you verify the situation with another trusted person.
- Contact the real person using a known number.
- Report the scam to your local authorities or the FTC.
