What It Is
Scammers pretend to be from Microsoft, Apple, or another tech company. They may call you or show a scary pop-up on your screen saying your computer is infected.
Warning Signs
- Unsolicited phone calls about “problems” on your computer.
- Pop-ups that lock your screen and display a phone number to call.
- Requests to install remote access software.
- Demands for payment to “fix” your device.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never give remote access to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Close pop-up windows with the X in the corner; do not call the number.
- Keep antivirus and system updates turned on.
- Only seek help from a trusted local repair shop or official support website.
What to Do If It Happens
- If you allowed remote access, disconnect from the internet immediately.
- Run a full antivirus scan.
- Change your passwords from a different, safe device.
- Contact your bank if you paid the scammer.
