What It Is
Smishing is phishing through text messages. Scammers send texts that look like they are from banks, delivery services, or government agencies, trying to get you to click a link or call a fake number.
Warning Signs
- Texts from unknown numbers claiming there is a “problem” with your account.
- Messages with links shortened or that look unfamiliar.
- Offers that are too good to be true or prizes you never entered for.
- Messages that ask you to reply with personal information.
How to Protect Yourself
- Do not tap links in unexpected texts.
- Delete any message that feels suspicious, even if it uses a real company name.
- Contact your bank or provider using the phone number on your card or bill, not the number in the text.
- Turn on spam and scam filters in your phone’s settings if available.
What to Do If It Happens
- If you tapped a suspicious link, close the browser and do not enter information.
- If you shared details, contact your bank or service provider immediately.
- Block the number and report it as spam to your phone carrier.
